Prolite Girths: Everything You Need To Know

by Eland Lodge 05 Aug 2022 0 Comments

What's so good about Prolite girths?

Prolite girths are a popular choice for flatwork, dressage, jumping and daily use. Read on to find out why so many people love them.

Girth Design

These girths are created, with permission, from Fairfax Saddle’s patented design of the Fairfax Performance Girth. Prolite girths are scientifically proven to drastically improve freedom of movement in horses, both on the flat and jumping.

For flatwork and dressage, the short girth encourages further leg extension and hock flexion, creating a better, more expressive movement.

When jumping, the benefits of the general purpose Prolite girth include encouraging the horse to pick up its front legs and improves their jump from the take off.

Material

The fabric used on these girths is breathable, helping to keep your horse cool, dry and comfortable, as well as being antibacterial and hypoallergenic. In addition, this material is 4x more durable against abrasion that leather, meaning the girth is tougher against rubs and damage.

Cleaning the girth is simple – just put the girth in a bucket of water and use a cloth or soft brush to remove any sweat or dirt. Once clean, towel off excess water and leave the girth to air dry.

What Prolite girth does your horse need?

Prolite girths come in long (general purpose) and short (dressage) girth lengths, as well as standard and narrow widths. The long girth should be used with GP and jump saddles with two flaps while the short dressage girth is for use on dressage and monoflap jump saddles.

The standard and narrow widths allow you to get the best fit for your horse, depending on their ribcage and girth groove.

Does your horse need the narrow gauge girth?

Your horse will be best with the narrow gauge Prolite girth if they have a slimmer rib cage, forward girth groove or the distance between your horse’s elbows is less than 20cm. In case you don't have a tape measure to hand, a sweat scaper is typically around 20cm wide. If a sweat scraper doesn't fit between your horse's front legs, they need a narrow gauge girth.

If your horse has more than 20cm between their elbows (or a sweat scraper will fit) and doesn't have too much wrinkly skin behind their elbow, a standard gauge Prolite girth would suit them.
