Founded in 1911, Charles Owen leads the international equestrian world as manufacturers of equestrian riding hats. Today the company is under the direction of Charles Owen’s grandson Roy Burek, who is regarded as a global expert in head protection and is passionate about educating the community to create a safer world. Some highlights of Charles Owen’s long history include being granted a patent in 1924 that improved ventilation and fit of military helmets used in the tropics. In 1928, the first Charles Owen motorcycle helmet was born and just ten years later, the Charles Owen jockey racing helmet was worn by the winning jockey of the famous Grand National steeplechase. The introduction of these early helmets had an immediate impact on the racing industry by, reducing rider skull fractures by 50%.
